Freddie and Tai star in Riga

Sweden’s Freddie Lindgren and Britain’s three-time world champion Tai Woffinden were the pick of the NGK-sponsored riders at the OlyBet FIM Speedway GP of Latvia.

Lindgren came second to Poland’s triple world champion Bartosz Zmarzlik with Woffinden finishing in fourth place after he was disqualified from the final for moving at the start.

Zmarzlik extended his Speedway GP World Championship lead to 22 points with Lindgren in second place on 100 points before the series heads to the FIM Speedway GP of Great Britain – Cardiff – Britain’s biggest indoor motorsport event – which takes place at Principality Stadium on September 2.

Current world champion Zmarzlik’s victory puts him just one win short of Australian great Jason Crump’s all-time record of 23 but Lindgren is determined to fight him all the way.

He said: “I have to do the best that I can and that’s all that I can do. I always look forward to Cardiff. I spent a lot of time racing in the UK for Wolverhampton. I feel I have great support in Cardiff, and I am really looking forward to racing inside this big stadium.”

Fellow NGK-sponsored rider Dan Bewley made the semi-final stage in Riga and is in sixth place in the championship on 78 points, seven ahead of NGK pit mate Robert Lambert who is in eight position on 71 points with Woffinden ninth on sixty points.

Becca Knight, Marketing Manager of Niterra UK Ltd, home of the NGK brand, said: “Freddie is in a really consistent vein of form and it was great to see Tai back to his best. I am sure all British Speedway fans will be backing them and Dan and Robert when they race in Cardiff next month.”
